There are three steps to the proverbial ticking time bomb: the ticks, the explosion and the aftermath. In January 2018, one small community in New Jersey was left in that third step – huddled together, looking toward its leaders and wondering exactly what had just happened.
That bomb was Police Chief Frank M. Nucera Jr. and on September 1, 2016, he exploded.
“Stay the fuck out of bordentown” is a five-part investigative podcast and Northeastern University School of Journalism Honors project that aims to answer this question and many more about the first American police officer to be indicted for a hate crime in over a decade, and the town that made him “his own boss.”
Grant M. Hill was raised in Bordentown City, New Jersey and spent seven months reporting, writing, recording and producing the podcast. Professor Carlene Hempel advised and edited the project. Brandon Tomei provided additional audio engineering.
